Chasen blonde

A Matcha whisk is an essential tool for perfect Matcha preparation. It whips the green tea powder into a creamy foam. Carefully rinse by hand after use.

Step-by-step guide

  • Before preparation, soak the whisk in a bowl or cup of hot water for about 1 minute to prevent the bristles from breaking.
  • Put 1 tsp of matcha powder into your bowl, preferably sifted through a Matcha strainer.
  • Add approximately 60ml of hot water (not boiling).
  • Whisk the matcha to create the perfect foam using M-shaped moves with your matcha whisk (chasen).
  • Rinse your chasen under running water and store it in a dry place.
  • Place the chasen on its holder after use.
  • Enjoy your homemade matcha.

FAQ about Chasen blonde

A chasen is the traditional bamboo whisk used to prepare matcha. Carved from a single piece of bamboo, it blends the matcha powder evenly with water and whisks it into a fine, creamy foam – the basis of an authentic matcha experience. Our chasen blonde is handmade and has 80 prongs.
The number of prongs affects the foam. Whisks with many prongs (around 80 to 100) create a particularly fine, creamy foam and are ideal for everyday use and beginners. Whisks with fewer prongs are better suited to thick matcha (koicha). Our chasen blonde has 80 prongs – a versatile all-rounder for classic, frothy matcha (usucha).
"Blonde" refers to the light, natural colour of the bamboo. The difference from darker bamboo whisks is purely visual – the colour has no effect on function or results.
Before first use, soak the prongs in warm water for about a minute so they become flexible. Sift 1 tsp (about 2 g) of matcha into a bowl, add around 60 ml of hot, not boiling water (~80 °C), and whisk with the chasen until frothy. Move loosely from the wrist in an M or W shape – not in circles. This creates the fine layer of foam.
It's usually one of these: the matcha wasn't sifted (lumps), there was too little powder or too much water, the chasen wasn't soaked beforehand, or the motion was circular instead of a quick M shape. A dry, wide bowl base and fast movements from the wrist help build an even foam.
Rinse the chasen with clear, warm water immediately after use – without soap or detergent, as these can damage the bamboo. Then let it air-dry, ideally prongs-up on a chasen holder so it keeps its shape. The chasen is not dishwasher-safe.
That depends on use and care. With proper cleaning and drying on a holder, a chasen lasts many months. Individual prongs may break over time – when noticeably many are missing or the foam no longer works, it's time for a new one.
For classic preparation we recommend a matcha bowl (chawan), a fine matcha sieve and – for drying and shape retention – a chasen holder. Bowl, sieve, whisk and holder together form the basic kit for even, frothy matcha.
Yes, an electric milk frother or a small whisk can be used as alternatives. However, the especially fine, creamy foam is most reliably achieved with a traditional chasen, whose many prongs whisk the powder optimally.
